Bota Mishuku: A Three-Dimensional Apartment House

Unique Design Blending Architecture and Nature

Bota Mishuku features ten houses built using a cooperative system, offering a fresh perspective on communal living. One of its standout features is the extensive use of plants on the exterior perpendicular walls, creating a visually striking and ever-changing appearance that evolves with the seasons. By incorporating an intermediate area between the rooms and the interior through wing walls and planting areas, the design not only ensures privacy for each dwelling unit but also contributes to the overall landscape formation.

The viewpoint from a slant adds depth and a three-dimensional quality to Bota Mishuku. Unlike traditional facades, which are often hidden from the street, this design embraces a unique perspective that allows the building to be appreciated from various angles. The combination of organic plants and straight lines creates a captivating contrast, further enhanced by the play of light and shadows.

Constructed using reinforced concrete, Bota Mishuku boasts a total floor area of 814.32sqm. Its site area spans 372.95sqm, with a building area of 217.50sqm. The design team, led by Shuntaro Nishizawa and Wataru Omameuda, carefully considered the technical specifications to ensure the realization of their vision.

With the planting zone as a focal point, Bota Mishuku fosters a connection between the residents and the surrounding community. The design encourages diversity and interaction, allowing the cooperative spirit to extend beyond the interior spaces and enrich the overall expression of the building.

Bota Mishuku is located in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, Japan. The project was completed within a specific timeframe, showcasing the dedication and expertise of the design team. Extensive research and creative problem-solving were undertaken to overcome challenges, such as the irregularity of the outer wall due to the flexibility of the dwelling unit design. However, the integration of flower beds and continuous wing walls created a facade that harmoniously embraces any alterations, providing a high degree of freedom for interior design.

Recognized for its excellence, Bota Mishuku received the Iron A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, practicality, and innovation, meeting professional and industrial requirements.
